Scenes from Sugar Island

Welcome to Greenwich Village Ink

Greenwich Village  Ink is a new indie publishing house.

Two short selections from Superior Peril, third book in the Getting to Know Jack series

"How far will this transmitter work? … What I mean is, wouldn’t it be better to use a cell phone to trigger it? … I’ve heard the terrorists use cell phones. … That way we could be somewhere far away, somewhere safe, when it blows.”

“Didn’t we agree—you’d let me worry about the explosives, and you’d take care of all the rest of it? … You need to back off so I can do my job.”

“And I am taking care of my end. … But I’m putting my neck on the chopping block right along with the rest of us. … If this bomb doesn’t work right, my career is done.”

“If we don’t do anything, our careers are destroyed anyway. … Look, this isn’t rocket science. If those two idiots in Boston could build bombs out of pressure cookers and fireworks … that is, successfully build bombs, I certainly can make an explosive device that can destroy one car.”

“I’m not questioning that. … I know you’re smart …”

“That’s the whole matter. This bomb has to look homemade. If we design it in too sophisticated a manner, with exotic components, it will be easy to trace.

“Look, here’s the deal. I want to use materials that anyone can get their hands on …”

“But pressure cookers and fireworks? … Come on! Isn’t that carrying this simplicity thing too far?”

“Not at all. It’s easier and safer to buy fireworks … good fireworks … than it is to buy plastic explosives. … Especially around the holiday. … And these things are virtually artillery shells. … Put enough of this stuff in an enclosed container, and you could blow up a train.”

“If you don’t pull this off … if this thing doesn’t work right … my life is over. … I just want it to work right.”

“And if we don’t do anything? … If we just walk away and let matters take their natural course? … What then?”

“Same thing … you know that.”

“Then that should make it very simple for you. … In a few days it will all be over, and we can get back to business as usual. … Isn’t that what you really want? … To get back to the way it was before?

“Just back off. … Working with this crap is nerve-wracking enough, without you looking over my shoulder and second-guessing everything. … Okay? Just please back off.” (Chapter 1)

 * * *

Red then texted: “By the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

“Really?” Kate said. “The lake is over 500 feet deep there. That’s a mighty big hole to get lost in. … Dad, did you hear anything about that?” Kate asked, looking now at her father. She had not yet been able to access Google.

Kate looked more like her late mother than she did her father. She was thin, tall, and when she was not in her NYPD detective mode, her five feet eight inch one hundred and twenty pound frame could have been mistaken for that of a runway model.

Her dark chestnut hair fell in large curls around her shoulders. While working she wore it tied back with a black scrunchie, which seemed to set off her green eyes.

Today she was wearing her dark denim skinny jeans, a sleeveless white shirt, a pair of Steve Madden wedge sandals. She carried a Marc Jacobs satchel.

As her father started to talk she lifted her sunglasses to the top of her head and listened intently to what her father had to say.

“Actually, I did hear about it, Jack responded. “… There’s nothing official, at least not yet. But from what I heard there were two craft that did not come back in. One was a mini sub, the kind used for exploration, and the other a larger boat, the one that supported the mini sub.

“And I understand that there were a total of nine. Names have not been released yet, so I’m not sure they were all men. … From what I hear, they did not go down looking for the Edmund Fitzgerald. Rather they were looking for some mysterious Minoan cargo vessel …”

“Wait a minute,” Kate interrupted, “Minoan? How could that be? … The Minoans? Weren’t they around sometime before Alexander the Great? … Like way before Greece?”

“Apparently this fellow, the father of Red’s friend, had taken a team of experts out to examine a shipwreck he had discovered earlier.  He claimed it to be Minoan …"  (Chapter 44)

When is the next Jack book coming out? –by Mario on August 19. Finally there is a new author who will challenge the likes of Michael Connelly and David Baldacci. In this latest mystery, Sugar Island (in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula) is used as a fitting backdrop to the wild action. It is a fast-paced thriller that you won’t want to put down until the final page. —Island Book. Murder on Sugar Island is a fast paced mystery full of twists and turns. This riveting thriller will keep you turning pages all the way to the shocking end. —Cascade Writer's Group. A good read. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and kept coming back to it whenever I had the free time. The characters were really good. Connelly and Baldacci should approve—by Dave on August 10, 2013. If you like James Patterson and Michael Connelly, you'll love Michael Carrier. Carrier has proven that he can hang with the best of them (seriously- we're talking Patterson and Connelly) with his newest book. It has all of the great, edge-of-your-seat action and suspense that you'd expect in a good thriller, and it kept me guessing to the very end. Fantastic read with an awesome detective duo.
